Ciba Specialty Chemicals Indonesia has been playing an active role in supporting the community. These include monetary donations and involvement in activities that create a conducive environment for the local community.

The Gandaria office also readily participates in natural calamity relief programs by providing financial and material aid to the victims.

• We actively and consistently support the Indonesian Red Cross by encouraging employees to be blood donors.

• In 2005, we joined local villagers to clean up a poorly maintained residential area for low income families. Steps were taken to improve the drainage system and street condition.

• In the past two years, the Gandaria office has awarded scholarships to more than 50 elementary school students. The scholarship encompasses school fees and textbooks for the entire school year. These students, aged from six to 13 years old, live in the site's neighborhood and study in the nearby local schools. Internship programs are also offered to students to get relevant working experience in our organization.

Excellence in Waste Water Disposal

Ciba Specialty Chemicals always aims to minimize emissions and wastes in all its production processes.

• PT Ciba Specialty Chemicals Indonesia received an award from the Jakarta Governor's Office for its wastewater treatment practices in 2005. This is the fourth consecutive year that our Gandaria plant in Jakarta has received this recognition.
  
  Water is an important element is most manufacturing processes. In our effort to minimize waste water, our team at the plant in Gandaria targets waste reduction at the source. The way that waste is managed in the plant is three-fold. At the start, the production processes are carefully evaluated and managed to ensure minimal waste production. Next, efforts are made to recycle 100% of the waste water back into the production process. On top of these initiatives, we also ensure that all employees are aware of their need to be environmentally responsible.
  
  This sound practice has certainly paid off. The award is an acknowledgement by the Indonesian Government of Ciba's commitment to being environmentally responsible in Indonesia.
