Ciba’s Paisley site is over 50 years old and, as well as being the largest classical organic pigment manufacturing facility in the world, it is also the most modern pigment plant of its type in the world.

Of the 21,000 tonnes annual output from the site, over 80% is exported. Its classical pigments are used primarily in the inks market to colour inks, paints and plastics. In addition it manufactures pigments for use in papermaking, textile printing and home and personal care products. The products are sold as powders, aqueous pastes and in dry granule form.

The 17 hectare site, as well as manufacturing pigments, has a significant Research and Development department and is the Global Technical Centre for Ink Applications. Paisley’s record for developing new products is excellent: over 40% of sales are from products launched within the last 5 years. The site has an excellent safety record, having bettered the UK Chemical Industries Association's target for thirteen consecutive years. Its environmental performance is no less impressive as evidenced by considerable reductions in wastes generated from manufacturing processes.

As the largest private employer in the Paisley area, the site has very strong links with the local community and regularly supports local community projects. The site publishes a newsletter, ‘Insight’, which gives its neighbours information about the site as well as covering other general community news. Of the 566 employees, most are recruited from local schools, colleges and universities. The site prides itself on links to well-developed courses for science and technology and actively encourages and supports many of its staff in gaining formal qualifications up to degree level.
