Ciba traces its roots back to 1758-1846 when Johann Rudolf Geigy started trading in dye goods and spices in Basel, Switzerland. Less then a century later, in 1855, the Chemical Industry of Basel was founded, providing the name Ciba. Geigy begins to sell dyestuffs in the United States in 1846.
 
1996Merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz announced to form Novartis. Industry sector businesses are spun to form Ciba Specialty Chemicals.
 
1996Ciba founded on September 9, the company is operationally independent as of January 1, 1997.
 
1997Ciba listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SWX:CIBN). The spin-off from Novartis is completed in March.
 
1997Ciba sponsors ADR program in U.S. in August, making investment in the global company easier for U.S. Investors.
 
1997Ciba and Witco announce a business swap, exchanging Ciba's additives for polyvinyl chloride heat stabilizer business and Witco's epoxy systems and adhesive business in a one-for-one-transaction.

 
1997Ciba buys Mallinckrodt's additive pre-blend business, adding complementary pre-blend service and technology to its polymer stabilization expertise.
