Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 is a highly effective multifunctional antioxidant that offers outstanding thermal, process and color stability to adhesives and sealants. Its unique design eliminates the need for co-stabilizers, such as phosphites and thiothers, thus simplifying the formulation and manufacture of adhesives, as well as storage, handling and use.
Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 Case Study
Hot melt adhesives for the nonwoven industry require products with superior technical performance. High thermal stability in the molten stage is especially crucial during the industrial process, as a change in rheology may result in a loss of production efficiency. Because adhesives based on unsaturated elastomers such as SIS and SBS are particularly susceptible to thermal degradation, manufacturers are always looking for innovative technologies that will provide improved performance at higher temperatures.
 | Several adhesive manufacturers have already had success using Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 in their products, particularly in SIS and SBS hot melt adhesives, commonly used in sanitary applications such as napkins and diapers. |
In December 2002, a global leader in the adhesive market, decided to evaluate Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 to improve the thermal stability of their SIS and SBS based hot melt adhesives. What they found was that in addition to providing excellent thermal stability, Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 offered improved color and viscosity stability as well. Only five months after sampling Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726, they began commercial orders of the product, stating
" Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 contributed to a significant improvement of the heat and color stability of our SBS / SIS hot melt adhesives. In addition, Ciba® IRGANOX® 1726 helped us to consolidate our additive packages for several applications."
