All Agricultural chemicals need to be supplied in a usable formulation that enables effective delivery to the target. The choice of formulation depends upon the actives involved. Until recently the main option for non-water soluble compounds was emulsifiable concentrates. However, these often contain high levels of organic solvents which are considered environmentally sensitive.

Now Ciba has developed a range of polymeric stabilisers which allows these actives to be prepared as oil in water emulsions. This results in formulations containing greatly reduced amounts of solvents. The technology is already being used commercially for the manufacture of pyrethroid oil in water emulsions. And many actives have been formulated to date, including solid  actives such as chlorpyrifos and liquid based actives such as 2,4-D and MCPA.

Ciba® COMPANION® was developed for a technology for the formulation of agrochemical actives, particularly insecticides.
