Water is critical for plant growth. There are some circumstances where water availability becomes a more serious concern. For example when cultivating seeds, growbags, hanging baskets and shrub planting. In these circumstances water retention can be extended so reducing the frequency of watering.

Transplantation of trees, shrubs, field crops and ornamentals can be a critical process during which “shock” from lack of water is always a risk. During this critical phase water supply must be maintained while new roots are being established.

Four main applications exist:

• Peat amendment, e.g. in hanging baskets.
• Root dipping, e.g. in forestry.
• Landscaping, e.g. grass establishment.
• Horticulture, e.g. flower growing and packing.
