Water Retention

Water is a basic requirement for plant growth. A range of water imbibing polymers aid water management by improving the water retention of all types of growing media. Improved water retention results in reduced drainage losses, less watering and improved plant growth. Ciba® ALCOSORB® ensures that best use is made of the water resources available.

Water Absorption Mechanism
Very large 3D network molecule
Water retention with water absorbing polymers
           Anionic                                              Non-inonic
      Strong attraction                                   Weaker attraction

The 3D network of the polymer acts like a sponge, initially absorbing water by attraction to the charged species within the matrix.

This causes the structure to become ionised opening up the network creating cavities which absorb water by capillary action.
