The color of an automobile is an integral part of its design. This extends of course to the plastics used in the various parts of the vehicle, whether internal or external. There are many different colorant chemistries and the choice depends on the polymer, processing conditions, and end-use requirements of the molded article.
Colorants may be divided into organic and inorganic pigments and polymer soluble colorants. Pigments lead to semi-translucent to opaque colored plastics. Polymer soluble colorants are used to color highly transparent plastics without a reduction in transparency.
