Applications

Machines with moving parts require lubricants for proper operation. Applications vary widely, ranging from micro-robotics to large cutting machines in the mining industry. Each specific application requires special properties from the lubricant, which are imparted through the use of additives.

The largest and most common lubricant application comprises engine oils, which are used in cars, trucks, planes and ships.  These products are uniquely formulated to withstand exposure to the combustion of fuels.

Engine oils containing the proper additive combination will function properly for a long period of time.

In addition to engine oils, vehicles require other types of lubricants such as power transmission fluids, brake fluids, engine coolants, and greases. These lubricants are all categorized by Ciba as transportation lubricants.

Industrial lubricants’, comprise such products as turbine oils, compressor oils and hydraulic fluids, which are used most extensively in manufacturing, farming, mining, and construction equipment.

Metal working fluids are a special class within the industrial lubricants. Since workers are often exposed to these fluids, it is critical that they are formulated to meet health and safety standards.
