Carbonless Copy Paper Technology

Carbonless Copy Paper Technology

Carbonless copy paper is used in many applications, ranging from invoices, contract forms, multi-part business forms and credit card transactions.

A carbonless copy paper multi-part set comprises three types of paper:

  • CB (Coated Back) The paper is coated on its back with a micro-encapsulated solution of color formers in an oil.
  • CFB (Coated Front and Back) The paper is coated on its front with a color developer and on its back with a micro-encapsulated solution of color formers in an oil.
  • CF (Coated Front) The paper is coated on its front with a color developer

When pressure is applied on the top (CB) sheet by a pen, typewriter or impact printer, the capsules coated on the underside rupture and the color former solution is transferred to the lower (CFB sheet). Upon contact with the CFB sheet, the color former solution reacts with the color developer to generate an image. In a similar way, the capsules on the underside of the CFB sheet rupture and form an image on the bottom (CF) sheet.
