Environmental Safety
Triclosan does not pose a demonstrable risk to the environment nor does it accumulate in the environment. Triclosan is predominantly used in personal care applications, and after use, triclosan is discharged into the wastewater system. The substance is almost completely removed from wastewater via biodegradation or sorption with only trace amounts detectable in the effluent water. Residuals that are not biodegraded or otherwise removed during wastewater treatment can enter the aquatic environment in wastewater effluents and sludges. Based on this, there have been a number of publications in the past five years reporting data on ecotoxicity studies, environmental fate and transport, and in-stream monitoring, as well as predictions from terrestial and aquatic risk assessments. To date, triclosan has not had a negative impact on the environment because in-stream sorption, biodegradation and photo degradation of triclosan residuals reduce real world environmental exposures.
