The synthetic fibers most commonly used in the home for carpets and upholstery fabrics are Polyamide fibers (PA) for carpet face yarns, Polyester fibers (PES) for upholstery and other furnishings, and Polypropylene fibers (PP) for carpet face yarns and furnishing fabrics. In addition, primary carpet backings are made with PP slit tapes (raffia) or nonwovens, while needle felt secondary backing materials made of PP staple fibers are being increasingly used.
 | The possibility to tailor the properties of synthetic fibers to fit new market demands continues to boost the use of these fibers in carpets, upholstery and home fibers. In carpets and furniture, appearance and durability are important considerations next to functionality and comfort (e.g. stain resistance, low odor). Flame retardant fibers contribute greatly to increased safety in public buildings. |
Ciba offers a wide range of additives, dyes and pigments for use in synthetic fibers. These are available in grades that give maximum performance in the processes that lead up to fiber spinning, such as dispersion and masterbatching, and also in the spinning process itself.
