Ciba® IRGAGUARD® B 1000, also known as Triclosan, inhibits the growth of micro-organisms such as algae and bacteria that may cause spoilage of the treated article, by using an electro-chemical mode of action to penetrate and disrupt their cell walls. When the cell walls are penetrated, leakage of metabolites occurs and other cell functions are disabled, thereby preventing the micro-organism from functioning or reproducing.
IRGAGUARD® B 1000 is widely used in a variety of applications as a broad spectrum antimicrobial to protect the treated article itself at very low concentration of 0.1 to 1.0% depending on the nature of end application.
Known disadvantages of triclosan is its volatility at high processing temperature due to its low melting point. In some polymer processing, temperature could go higher than 250C where triclosan can volatilize. In those applications, we recommend our other products like IRGAGUARD® B silver biocides.
If your application requires strong protection against fungi-caused degradation, the use of IRGAGUARD® F 3000 is recommended.
