Ciba® IRGAGUARD® B silver are inorganic antimicrobial products, a silver ion based upon a technology that encapsulates the silver ions in a soluble matrix such as and glass. These matrixes protect the silver ions during processing and provide controlled releases. In these systems the silver ions are locked in the matrix and are only released as the matrix is gradually hydrolyzed upon contact with moisture. The high stability of the matrix enables the silver ion systems to be used with great success in a wide range of polymers.
Ciba offers two different technologies of silver antimicrobials, and they are:
IRGAGUARD® B 5000 which is a silver zinc zeolite, mainly recommended to be used in general pigmented plastic where translucency or clarity is not needed.
IRGAGUARD® B 6000 is silver zinc in glass – recommended to be used in clear & translucent plastic application such as Polycarbonate.
IRGAGUARD® B 7000 – has the smallest particle size also based on silver zinc glass designed to be used in textile, fiber & non woven applications.
Silver-based antimicrobials use an ion exchange mechanism that slowly releases silver ions. These ions interact with the micro-organisms bonding sites to prevent a wide spectrum of bacteria from reproducing on plastic parts and therefore protect the treated plastic parts themselves. This slow, regulated release provides long-lasting effectiveness.
If your plastic application requires a strong protection against fungi-caused degradation, the use of IRGAGUARD® F 3000 antimicrobials is recommended.
If you are looking for algae degradation protection, IRGAGUARD® B 1000 would be more effective.
The recommended use level in polymer formulation is from 0.1 to 3% depending on the nature of end use application.
Key attributes
| For any processing & end-use temperature | If your processing temperature do not exceed 270 degres C, you could also use IRGAGUARD® B 1000 antimicrobial |
Food contact clearance - US FDA: 3% max. - EU (SML): 0.05 mg/kg | If your application requires a migratory antimicrobial, we recommend use IRGAGUARD® B 1000 antimicrobial |
| For indoor and outdoor end-use applications | If you are formulating a material dedicated for indoor use only IRGAGUARD® B 1000 could be an alternative choice |
