Loss of Mechanical Properties

Loss of Mechanical Properties
brittleness

Micro-organisms can use any components of the material formulation as a nutrient. This can lead to premature loss of the mechanical properties and can result in brittleness, shrinkage, loss of tensile strength and integrity of the product.

Material are expected to ensure long-term performance and reliability. The introduction of an antimicrobial solution in the polymer matrix to get the right protection is strongly recommended.

Fungi and bacteria are responsible for:

  • Break-down of the polymer chain (e.g. TPU)
  • Degradation of ingredients (e.g. plasticizer, natural fibers)

Fungi have a key action for primary break-down which results in:

  • Loss of performance (e.g. wood composite)
  • Liability issues

Technology available to prevent loss of mechanical properties:

Antimicrobial products
IRGAGUARD® B 5000
IRGAGUARD® F 3000
