Pigment Selection for Polyolefin and PVC Outdoor applications
Ciba Specialty Chemicals has developed a wide range of light- and weather resistant pigments to meet the high demands of interior or outdoor applications such as stadium seats, bottle crates and window profiles.
For outdoor applications, pigments should be selected for their weather resistance characteristics. This is separate from the pigment’s light-fastness characteristic: weather resistant pigments are usually lightfast but the reverse is not always the case.
The selection of pigments for outdoor use depends on:
- Outdoor performance requirements (life time, climatic region e.g. MJ/m2)
- Polymer type
- Concentration of the pigment
- Presence of titanium dioxide (which typically accelerates color fading)
Performance can also be influenced by:
- The surface of the plastic article
- The processing heat history during manufacturing of the plastic article.
The light stabilizer system has to be considered together with the pigment formulation and the specified failure criteria for the final article.
