Enduse Properties

Polyvinylchloride Coloration - End-Use Properties

Concentration of Pigments

Resistance properties in plastics are dependent on pigment concentration, and the polymer system being used. Regarding heat resistance light fastness and weather fastness, if a pigment is applied at a level lower than “critical concentration”, resistance properties of the colour can be dramatically reduced. The performance of the pigment can be further reduced by the incorporation of Titanium Dioxide, especially when making “tints”. Therefore, it is essential to completely satisfy oneself of the actual stability of the pigment at the concentration to be used in the actual polymer system prior to producing the final article. For actual “critical concentrations” data with regard to Ciba colorants polymers, please contact your local Ciba representative.

Pigments and Food Contact Regulation

The status of Ciba colorants for food contact applications and toys is described in Technical Bulletin 3H - 1999 - Colorants for use in food packaging , Toys and Consumer goods. Particularly important are the Food and Drug administration (FDA - USA); the Circulaire No. 176 - (French Positive List) in France; BGVV - Germany; and JOSHPA and JHPA of Japan. Also of importance are the APME/ETAD Criteria AP(89)1 and the European Toy norm 71-3-1994.
