Polyvinylchloride Coloration - PVC Special
Dry Blending of PVC
Rigid PVC (rPVC) is generally processed via dry blending and extrusion. As a suggestion one should avoid using too high pigment concentrations, as this can induce the likelihood of compaction (link to "Processing Properties") of the pigments. Where high pigment concentrations are used, the use of high speed mixers should be avoided if at all possible. The use of fine polymer particles is appreciated for dry blending as they can prevent agglomeration. Shade reproducibility with pigment preparations, like Ciba® MICRANYL® NQ-F is much better than with pigment powders or pigment concentrates (masterbatches). Therefore, use of pigment preparations as Ciba® MICRANYL® NQ-F is highly recommended for rPVC.
Pigments and Food Contact Regulation
The status of Ciba colorants for food contact applications and toys is described in Technical Bulletin 3H - 1999 - Colorants for use in food packaging , Toys and Consumer goods. Particularly important are the Food and Drug administration (FDA - USA); the Circulaire No. 176 - (French Positive List) in France; BGVV - Germany; and JOSHPA and JHPA of Japan. Also of importance are the APME/ETAD Criteria AP(89)1 and the European Toy norm 71-3-1994.
