Why the need for dredging?
Dredging is used to deepen and maintain navigable waterways, to remove sediments from rivers, lakes and canals, to create and maintain beaches, to excavate harbours, build docks, reclaim land, restore aquatic and wetland habitats, to provide sand and gravels for the construction industry and to excavate pipeline, cable and tunnel trenches.
Several of the industry’s larger players are based in the Netherlands, Belgium and the US with their origins in land reclamation and waterway deepening.
Dredging is an important process for marine transport and the economy, keeping harbours and rivers clear as ships and tankers get bigger and it is also important for environmental developments and conservation. It may take place in sensitive aquatic environments, even near coral reefs where processes need to have little or no ecological impact and yet enable pristine water to be returned to the sea.
Ciba has been involved in many aspects of dredging including projects throughout the world. Case Studies relating to a few of these projects can be downloaded via the links opposite.
