Ciba Specialty Chemicals has introduced Ciba IRGASTAB® BD 100, a stabilizer designed to give biodiesel fuel long-term protection against oxidative degradation through biodiesel’s life cycle.

Biodiesel is derived from natural and renewable substances such as vegetable oils and animal fats and has become increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based fuels. As with other natural substances, if left untreated, biodiesel is susceptible to oxidative degradation. Degradation of biodiesel leads to the formation of lower molecular weight acids, peroxides and gums that can result in unwanted changes in both the properties and performance of biodiesel. These deposits and gums can result in damage to the engine and fuel injection systems.

To help ensure that fuel quality is maintained during storage, handling and use, specifications have been established in standards such as ASTM D6751 and European Standard DIN EN 14214. IRGASTAB® BD 100 can help biodiesel meet these standards and offers extended protection to help maintain fuel quality and consistency.

“Ciba Specialty Chemicals has a long history of expertise in developing antioxidant and other stabilization technologies. With IRGASTAB® BD 100, we are now bringing this knowledge and experience to the biodiesel market,” says Natalie Li, Global Marketing Manager, Process & Lubricant Additives business. “IRGASTAB® BD 100 supports the growing worldwide use of biodiesel by offering the necessary protection to help ensure consumer confidence in using this alternative fuel.”

The inherent stability of biodiesel is dependent on the raw materials used. Oils and esters containing higher levels of unsaturation will generally have lower overall stability and require greater protection from oxidation. Additional factors that can influence the stability of biodiesel include processing conditions, length of storage, temperature, exposure to air and light and presence of metals and impurities. IRGASTAB® BD 100 offers excellent oxidative stability in a variety of feedstocks such as those based on rapeseed, recycled cooking oil, palm, soy and jatropha.

In addition, IRGASTAB® BD 100 provides added protection against metals which can be introduced into biodiesel during production, storage and use. “Even high quality biodiesel can be susceptible to degradation from trace metals, such as copper and iron,” says Li.

IRGASTAB® BD 100 is a 100% active liquid stabilizer that helps simplify both processing and dosing. With its convenient liquid form, IRGASTAB® BD 100 eliminates the need for predissolving or mixing, unlike solid antioxidants. In addition, because IRGASTAB® BD 100 is 100% active, there is no introduction of solvents or diluents, which can make it very cost-effective in comparison to some standard antioxidants.
